Turning 30: Birthday Milestone

Now that we’re in April, the first thing that comes to mind is my birthday is a month away (YAY!). This one is sticking out more than others though because I’m turning 30. Yes, you read it right…I’m turning THREE-ZERO, THIRTY, and any other variation that reflects the number 3 and 0. Want to hear something stinky too? My husband won’t be around. Whomp, whomp. ‘Tis the life of a military spouse. No biggie because we plan to celebrate before he leaves in a couple of weeks. The Lion King has a traveling show starting in Richmond…AND I MUST SEE IT!…

10 Lessons Learned from My Cat

Xena is a joy. When my husband and I adopted her almost two years ago, I couldn’t imagine how she would imprint on our lives. It sounds silly, but she seriously brings happiness to us. Xena is weirdly and adorably attached to both my husband and I — and must follow us where ever in our home we go. And if we happen to be in two different rooms, she has no idea what to do. Most of the time, she sits smack dab in the middle, patiently waiting for when we are in the same room again. She eats…

Some Exciting Things A-Brewin’

I’m going to let you in on a huge secret I’ve been keeping from pretty much everybody. I applied to Grad School about a month ago. Seriously though, I didn’t even tell my parents, it was that BIG of a secret (I tell my parents nearly everything). A combination of extreme nervousness and fear of disappointment (as silly as it sounds) kept me from telling people. I’ve been exploring programs nonchalantly for the last year and hoping to come across a program that caught my attention. Of course, I’ve been working in both the public relations and journalism realm, so I…

Nominate your hero for a free meal!

This post is sponsored by Single Edition Media on behalf of La Brea Bakery. As military families, we are very familiar with time apart from our service member. We’re used to missed birthdays, holidays and anniversaries. It comes with the territory. With Thanksgiving coming up, it’s natural for us to think of others, especially for those that make us thankful for what we have. We can’t leave out our loved ones that have to spend the holiday away, serving our country. I’m lucky to be married to a special soldier and have a retired airmen as a father. We learn to…

It’s time to buck up: why I let go during my husband’s TDY

Earlier this month, my husband returned back from a short two month TDY. In the two months, I managed to keep myself extremely busy with work, visits to friends and family — and what I’m not exactly proud of, but overall laziness. I don’t know what it was about August and September. I didn’t go to the gym once (it’s even painful to admit…) and I pretty much spent any free time binge watching Netflix. I. Couldn’t. Even. For some reason, I didn’t take any of my advice about making the most of separations or or anything for myself really.…

Keepin’ it Weird: My Austin Food Tour

My dad had some use it or lose it vacation time and decided to take off a week in September. After he told me about it, I started entertaining the notion of visiting home, if I find a good deal. Lately, I’ve been flying Southwest Airlines because they have a direct flight from DCA to AUS. I tested some dates near my dad’s time off and came across an awesome sale. It was too good to pass up! So, I bought my ticket with the intent to work my hours during the time my mom was at her job and…

Life Lately: Alaska, Parents Visit, Camping and More!

As I welcome August, it also means that my husband will be leaving for a two month TDY soon. For the past month or so, we’ve been making the most of our time together before the summer ends. That means, all the free time I have is spent with him (I know, I know, when will I get tired of him?!). Another new development, I’ve been very involved with the local spouses’ club, so that has been utilizing my spare time. As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun! I’m still working on juggling it all. My adventures…

Virginia Adventures: Westmoreland State Park

My husband and I officially kicked off Summer with our first camping trip of the season! During our time here, we’re trying to make an effort to explore all the regional parks as well. Last year, we cabin camped at Lake Anna State Park and we don’t even count that as “real” camping because we didn’t pitch a tent. Our camping time was cut short last year because of a series of TDYs. This year, we’ve given a little more Summer time, but it will still have to end short for another TDY! That meant we needed to schedule some…

Alone on Valentine’s Day? Make it all about yourself!

Back in 2013, I wrote a handful of blog posts for MilPages. The site now operates as forum for military members now and all my entries aren’t live anymore. I thought it would be appropriate to share my very first entry with them because it was about Valentine’s Day — and how I’ve used to spend the day alone…. Here is what I wrote two years ago: I’ve never spent Valentine’s Day with my husband and I won’t this year either. It doesn’t bother me though. I swear I’m not the Valentine’s Day scrooge. I believe we should show love…

My First Bed & Breakfast — Recap

Last Sunday, my husband and I celebrated our anniversary (insert happy dance). We counted ourselves lucky that he’s actually around for this event that we wanted to go out of our way to plan a romantic weekend getaway. I found this great deal on a Bed & Breakfast stay for the Hillbrook Inn in West Virginia that includes a spa and dinner credit. Why not?! We’ve never been to a B&B before and I’ve been wanting to check it out for awhile now. This particular B&B is only about a two hour drive, so it worked out to make an…
